Kanye West, Drake & Chance The Rapper Top MTV’s 2016 Hottest MCs List

Kanye West scores the number one spot for the second time in his career.

The last time MTV did their annual list of the Hottest MCs in the Game, the years was 2012, and Kendrick Lamar was crowned number one. For the first time since then, the list has returned, and the jury, a panel involving the likes of Nick Cannon and Joe Budden, has decided their order for this year. After much debate, Kanye West was ranked top shotta, mostly for his highly influential album TLOP and his incredibly innovative Saint Pablo Tour.

Last time Kanye West got the number one spot was in 2008, after the Chicago rapper reached career a new career peak with the release of Graduation. Toronto superstar Drake came in at second, and Chance The Rapper rounded out the top 3. Among the accomplished rappers missing from this year’s list are Childish Gambino, ScHoolboy Q, Kid Cudi, and most notably, Mr. Platinum With No Features, J. The Weeknd’s “Starboy” Dominates The Charts

The Weeknd’s Starboy absolutely crushed its debut, selling 200k physical copies and clockings 347k TAEU (total album equivalent units) when factoring in the massive amount of streams it received. Abel is #1 on the Billboard 200 by a wide margin and also has all 18 tracks from the album in the Hot 100, meaning he nearly occupies nearly 1/5 of the entire chart. Goddamn.

Bruno Mars is the only other hip-hop/R&B-related release in the top 10, with Drake getting bumped back to #12 with VIEWS. A Tribe Called Quest, Rae Sremmurd, and the Suicide Squad soundtrack all land in the top 20.
