Most artists feel they have arrived once signed to a major record label. For Dominican-born, internationally raised singer-songwriter, Roxiny (pronouced Rox-E-n-E), it was just the opposite. Walking away from the coveted $100k music videos, world tours, and big advances of a Sony deal was just the first step in staying true to her craft and not giving in to becoming just another major label construct. This time around, she is doing things her way. Her voice is that of a spiritual gangster.
Her lyrics tell of destructive bad assery seeped in magical realism, love, and lessons learned. Yet her story is more of a bad girl gone…better. Growing up in Southern Italy, Spain, Panama, and the Dominican Republic, she became witness to realities that have shaped her world view and sparked the activist in her. So while she knows what it is to be offered record deals from Interscope and Def Jam, and though she can recollect artists like Big Boy of Outkast giving her the co-sign, she simply finds value in the ability to let her voice be heard.
